Understanding Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy is a common complication of Diabetes, affecting up to half of all diabetic patients.

High levels of glucose in the blood can injure nerves throughout the body, with the legs and feet most often damaged.

This nerve damage can lead to debilitating pain and numbness in the legs, feet, and hands. Patients may also experience issues with their digestive system, urinary tract, blood vessels, and heart.

The severity of symptoms can vary from mild to severe.

Causes and Risk Factors of DPN Pain

While the exact cause of each type of neuropathy is still under investigation, it's believed that uncontrolled high blood sugar damages nerves.

High blood sugar also weakens the walls of vessels supplying nerves with nutrients and oxygen, contributing to nerve damage.
